Meal Time - Shop* Make* Serve* Eat* unit was created by Ashley King. The unit was developed for the use of 3 and 4 year old students in a preschool autism classroom. Ashley is a M.Ed. student at the University of South Carolina with an emphasis on Severe and Multiple Disabilities and Early Childhood Special Education.
The purpose of the thematic unit is to use multiple varieties of instruction embedded within motivating formats integrated with food. During my three years of teaching students with autism, I have found food to be a common, highly motivating learning item with all students. This year my students’ abilities range throughout all developmental domains. For example, some students are learning how to feed themselves independently, while others are learning social skills related to eating at a restaurant or going to the grocery store. Therefore this unit is designed to provide all students learning opportunities to progress towards meeting their individual goals.
