1. Pre Planning: Objective: Given a kidspiration web tool, the student will discriminate between signs in the community to identify the signs of restaurants at 100% accuracy. Depending on the student’s skill level, instruction will be modified for students according to their IEP goals. Materials: Kidspiration web tool Signs in the community
2. Lesson Opening: We have been talking about food in this unit. What do we do with food? That’s right! We eat food. We can eat food in all different kinds of places. You can eat food at a table, at school, at home. Another place you can eat food is a restaurant. This is where you order food or a waiter takes your order. In restaurants we must have good behavior like we talk and model in school. Let’s look at some different pictures and make a group of restaurant names we go to eat. That way we will know they are restaurants and we will be ready to order, eat, and have good behavior. At the end of the lesson you will be able to name several different kinds of restaurant signs and be able to discriminate the signs from street signs. Remember we learned about street signs in our truck unit.
4. Lesson body: Part 1 MODEL: All of these pictures on the floor are signs. Some are road signs and some are restaurant signs. When I touch the picture, I am going to identify the sign and put it in the correct pile. · McDonalds – Restaurant sign · Wendys – Restaurant sign · Stop – Road sign · Yield – Road sign · Chili’s – Restaurant sign · One Way – Road sign Discuss that road signs tell you how to be safe on the road, and restaurant signs let you know it is a place you can order food. LEAD: Teacher guided problems/discoveries (guided practice) Now together, we will say road sign or restaurant sign, when my finger touches the picture. We will go through 6 to 10 more signs chorally together. TEST: I will say each child’s name to let you know it’s your turn. Each friend will tell me if the picture is a restaurant sign or a road sign. Then the friend will help me sort the picture in the correct pile. Part 2 MODEL: Now it’s time to make a visual chart on the smart board to help us organize signs. When I touch the picture, I am going to identify the sign and move it to the correct group. · Burger King – Restaurant sign · Slow down – Road sign · Chick-fil-a – Restaurant sign · Texas Roadhouse – Restaurant sign · School Crossing – Road sign LEAD: Teacher guided problems/discoveries (guided practice) Now together, we will say road sign or restaurant sign, when my finger touches the picture, then I will move the picture to the group you named. We will go through 6 to 10 more signs chorally together. TEST: I will say each child’s name to let you know it’s your turn. Each friend will tell me if the picture I point to is a restaurant sign or a road sign. Then the friend will walk to the smart board to move the picture to the correct group. DIFFERENTIATION: All students will have many opportunities to look at the signs on the floor and on the smart board. During the lesson, children will have multiple ways to expressively label the picture. One student will use an Ipod touch. 5. Lesson closing: Closing Power point Slide: Remember we are working on grouping signs based on the functions. Road signs help us to be safe, and restaurant signs tell us where to eat. These are all signs they just tell us different things. When your schedule has a computer picture on it, you will go to the computer. Remember we are going to group the signs by their function. Ms. Chariety will be there to assist you if you need extra help.
7. Evaluation: During the next week we will be reviewing different kinds of places you eat. I along with my paraprofessionals will record each student’s sorting in graphic organizers. Objectives will be evaluated based on the IEP goals for each student (i.e. some students may only need to complete the activity 16/20 times to gain 100% accuracy).
